Island LOVE: Hvar, Croatia

Hvar is the fourth-largest among the many islands studding the Adriatic coast, and it is situated right in the heart of Croatia. This is an absolutely marvelous spot, with lots of unexpected and enchanting discoveries to be made.
To get there, you need to catch a ferry in Split; the ride will take about one hour. You will be offered quite a few beautiful views on the island itself as the ferry approaches the island’s harbor. As soon as you leave the boat, Croatian flair and a very special Mediterranean atmosphere will surround you. The historical city center is just a few steps away from the harbor. Be prepared to walk, as many parts of the island are not accessible by car, even though taxicabs are available and a number of bus routes have been set up.

The historical center of town and its many bars, restaurants, shops and hotels are best explored on foot, following a beautiful boardwalk right along the coast. Your walk will also allow you to admire quite a bit of the Hvar’s natural beauty, and you’ll enjoy the wonderfully mild climate – even though it can be quite hot during summer months.
Hvar has recently gained a reputation as the Croatian St. Tropez. This reputation is confirmed by the great number of stylish bars and restaurants. Hvar is not one of Croatia’s most inexpensive islands, but definitely one of the most beautiful ones.
Once a year, Hvar is the location of the world-famous Yacht Week. During this week, you’ll get to see the most gorgeous yachts from all over the world. And yachts thrive on a bit of admiration!

But Hvar is known for another specialty: LAVENDER. Take a deep breath while strolling over the market. Lavender combined with a bit of ocean breeze will put a smile on anybody’s face.
A walk through the historical center of town with its many narrow alleys cobbled with pastel-colored chalkstone and up many steep steps takes me to a beautiful oasis: Fig is a charming little restaurant, hidden away in a side street. It offers excellent imaginative vegetarian fare, characterized by an ample use of local scents and spices, of rosemary, olive, agave, cypress, orange and lemon.
But of course I was also on the look-out for anything to do with beauty, and I struck gold: “The Green Shop” – omen est nomen! – offers a wide range of beauty products, with local, healthy ingredients. Lavender, of course, as oil, cream or serum. Lavender has so many exceptional qualities; it is nourishing, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and regenerates skin cells

And just a few steps away, the next treasure: a small, private shop called SOSA. Pretty jewelry and art by local artists are very inspiring. Wherever you turn, the next beautiful shop or café is just a few steps away. You’ll spend hours just taking it all in.

Worn out from a long day of walking and gazing I turned towards the extremely trendy beach bar “Falko”. Located directly on the boardwalk, this is a perfect place to enjoy your sundowner lounging in a hammock.

The entire island is suffused by the inhabitants‘ very special zest for life, and its beautiful natural colors. If you’re in need of a bit of inspiration and lots of relaxation: Off you go, to Hvar!
